Congrats for the new album! So far how has the general reaction been? Have the fans and press liked it?
Thank you so much! we have got a really positive feedback from both, press and fans from different parts of the world, and that´s very rewarding.
“Love, Death & Flies” came out exactly as you wanted or, listening now, would you change a thing or two?
A work of art is always open to change but the truth is that we are very proud of the final result. I would have liked to include things that we left out at the last minute.
What’s the main difference between you and the typical hard/heavy bands?
Maybe our style fusion (southern, metal even gospel) it is very significant in this band.
What are you addressing here, lyrically?
When I usually write lyrics I am inspired by people stories related to feminism, animal rights or gender violence. I also tell personal stories such as a paranormal anecdote I lived or a car accident I had. But I also take inspiration from other artists. For example, writers like Poe or Bécquer, characters from series or movies (The Queen of the Damned, Interview with the Vampire, Jeepers Creepers, Game of Thrones), photographers like Nat Enémede, Javier Bragado or Tony Madrid transmit me a lot; illustrators like B. Lacombe, fashion designers as Palomo Spain, tattoo artists like Kat Von D or Anthony Flemming, or even video games like Dark Country. All of this helps me to create the lyrical, visual and auditory world that surrounds my band.
The band’s name is just your name. Why?
Yes that´s correct, it´s my name. I decided to start this project and I told Nitro (drummer) and Javi (Guitar). We three agreed that my name was cool enough for this. Despite the fact of being my name, we all feel as a whole band. I think it is great when they say themselves: We Bárbara Black, in interviews etc.
With the pandemic situation, how do you promote the album?
We are using all the digital platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Spotify, iTunes, our web www.barbarablackrock.com . We are doing lots of interviews in different webzines, radios, blogs or TVs all over the world thanks to our great company Angels PR Music Promotions.
What are your main music influences?
We really like bands such as Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry, Blues Saraceno or Shinedown. And in the last few months we really enjoy the darker sound of In this Moment, I personally love Maria Brink´s voice.
If you could organize a tour with the best bands of today’s metal what would these bands be?
Black Stone Cherry, Shinedown, Sixx A.M., Halestorm, Doro Pesch, In This Moment, Alter Bridge…and many more!
Spain is very strong in music with many awesome bands and artists. But what about the metal scene in particular?
There are lots of great quality bands in very different metal and rock styles. Everybody is working extra hard due to the pandemic. There are some promoters too who are trying to give us support in these hard times, such as Vampire Productions, they have organize a great streaming fest the next February the 17th and 18th where we will be playing at.
What do you do when not playing or doing Barbara Black stuff?
I am working at school as a music teacher, watching Netflix or doing sport. But before the pandemic time l loved going out at restaurant, travelling abroad or going to some concert.
Do you listen to other genres outside of metal? What “outside” bands do you listen to?
Yes! I listen to country music too (Jason Aldean, Eric Sardinas, Craig Campbell), and gospel music. And Nitro and Márquez listen to rap style too (Eminem, Nach, Kase-O).
